A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

February 22, 2022

It has long been understood that a visual image can convey a story far more succinctly than words.

Leonardo da Vinci wrote that a poet would be “overcome by sleep and hunger before being able to describe with words what a painter is able to depict in an instant.”  Napoleon Bonaparte said that ‘a good sketch is better than a long speech’. And we all know the old adage ‘A picture is worth a thousand words.’

Now, with most smart phones equipped with cameras, it has never been easier for us to take a photo, to capture experiences that matter to us and that we want to treasure forever; amazing landscapes, iconic buildings, cultural events, exotic wildlife, and even the people we meet on our travels. But taking good, representative and captivating photographs might not be as easy for everyone.

Photography has been at the heart of National Geographic since its origins, and for over 100 years our photographers have been bringing the world to life for our readers through their images. So, is there anyone better than a renowned National Geographic photographer to teach you how to best capture movement and light in the amazing destinations we visit?

This is key reason why you get more out of your holiday when you travel the world with National Geographic Expeditions – on many of our expeditions you will travel with a National Geographic photographer by your side, there to impart their wisdom and help you to capture on camera your unforgettable holidays moments in the best way possible! Through enriching presentations, informal discussions and one-on-one conversations, they will add a unique storytelling element to the travel experience and help you create photographs you can treasure, share and display in your home so your holiday can live on for many years to come.

You don’t need to be an experienced photographer with a fancy SLR camera, even if you are simply armed with a smart phone, they are there to enrich everyone’s experience and to show the world through their eyes. Travel photography goes further than just capturing a great image. It’s there to tell a story, educate and inspire and that is what our photographers are there to help you to do.

Just one example of one of the amazing photographers you will travel with is the award-winning Australian photographer Jason Edwards who will accompany our upcoming Greenland: Expedition To The Edge Of The Ice Sheet. Jason has been at the forefront of wildlife and environmental photography since beginning his career at the Royal Melbourne Zoo over three decades ago. His work has appeared in hundreds of publications, including National Geographic magazine, BBC WildlifeAustralian GeographicNew York Times, and Condé Nast Traveler; as well as science education books, environmental campaigns, and Hollywood blockbusters. As the face of the National Geographic Channel’s Pure Photography, he has taken his storytelling to every continent. Jason is also an associate fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers, a two-time winner of the Eureka Prize for Science Photography, and winner of the Australian Geographic Society’s Pursuit of Excellence Award.
